Trespasser

Trespasser

Grace Potter’s second tribute to hitting the highway (following 2023’s Mother Road) was inspired by the mileage she’s racked up over the years, particularly during the cross-country trek between her Southern California home and her home state of Vermont. (She made that trip eight times in the five years leading up to Trespasser’s release.) Invoking the spirit of a road trip and the wrong turns you can make while on one, Trespasser has the vibrancy and playfulness of a mixtape, with a healthy dose of sing-along moments. Potter channels those hopes and disappointments into songs like “Ride or Die”, which chronicles a thrillingly illicit getaway, and “Run Baby Run”, which has the urgency of a flurry of red flags warning someone away from a lousy match. The expansive “The Voice” brings a sense of American gothic into the mix, Potter wailing as she spins a yarn about gold-filled lands that were actually mirages, while closing track “Belong” is a ruminative soul ballad, Potter mulling over the reasons why she loves to pack her “suitcase full of dreams” and get in her car.
