On his debut album, this modern-day “prince” is melodic, melodramatic and commanding. Inserting quirky electronic howls, plucks and drones that ricochet around the groove, as on “Na Na Nau”, he changes voice and mood like an actor playing multiple parts in a domestic drama of conflicted characters. One moment he’s a Jamaican dancehall toaster or a gangster firing “Plaka Plaka”; the next he’s a contemporary crooner or a mischievous joker. A few bits of English snake their way in on the humourous party-starter “Prrrum”.
