Up Ya Archives

No longer relegated to underground raves, jungle and drum ’n’ bass have risen to become cornerstones of British music, as essential to the country’s cultural fabric as punk or grime. Today, a new generation of women is reimagining the sounds’ possibilities, injecting their signature furious breakbeats with personal lyrics, soulful melodies and pop sensibilities. Few are doing this as prudently or uproariously as Nia Archives, a young producer from Leeds and a self-described “emotional junglist”. By tackling bigger, more intimate themes in her music, like mental health, identity and belonging (one track even samples the Maya Angelou poem “Still I Rise”), she brings a distinctly young, Black and female perspective to a scene ripe for refreshing. On Up Ya Archives, her first Apple Music radio show, she presents exclusive DJ mixes featuring next-gen junglists from all around the world.
