Philadelphia 1889. Symphonic Evening

Through the year of the Centennial Exposition, 1876, an international celebration of their Declaration of Indipendence adopted in 1776 in Philadelphia, the city continues to grow larger and larger, welcoming new imigrators from various countries and regions in Europe. Orchestral activities had already been stable with Germania Orchestra (est. 1856) and the theatre Academy of Music (est. 1855) performing important operas regularly, moreover in the 1880s two more houses come to open for operatic performances. By the time, many talented composers born in America experienced studies in Europe (many especially in Munich) and already came to play important roles on both sides of the Atlantic, slightly tending to prefer German taste and style, not ignoring French, Italian and English lyrical masterworks. Thus was the musical circumstance in Philadelphia around the year of opening of their new City Hall.
