The Canadian brother/sister duo explore the drama and fiery passion of Spanish music through arrangements and original works for cello and piano. With playing of theatricality, wit and incredible dynamic range, they breathe new intensity into Manuel de Falla’s playful, heartfelt songs and piano works by Granados and Albéniz. The Suite for Cello by early 20th-century cellist/composer Gaspar Cassadó mines a rich seam with its Spanish roots, homages to Baroque composers and brief nods to Ravel and Kodály. A virtuosic performance of Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen, originally for violin and orchestra, ends this album with a hot-blooded flourish.
