Written and recorded with Brett Anderson having overcome various addictions, A New Morning sounds understandably wounded but optimistic. Smiths and Blur producer Stephen Street helps shape the band’s sunnier outlook into a rich, elegant collection that recalls 1996’s Coming Up with its mix of sashaying guitar pop (“Beautiful Loser”, “Street Life”), mid-tempo anthems (“Lost In TV”, “Positivity”) and stately ballads (“Untitled”). A lot of the drama and darkness may have lifted but Suede’s alluring songcraft remains.
