Written and recorded with Brett Anderson having overcome various addictions, A New Morning sounds understandably wounded but optimistic. Smiths and Blur producer Stephen Street helps shape the band’s sunnier outlook into a rich, elegant collection that recalls 1996’s Coming Up, with its mix of sashaying guitar pop (“Beautiful Loser”, “Street Life”), midtempo anthems (“Lost in TV”, “Positivity”) and stately ballads (“Untitled”). A lot of the drama and darkness may have lifted, but Suede’s alluring songcraft remains.
