Tash Sultana Essentials

Tash Sultana’s is a rags-to-riches story. A drug addict as a teen, at 17 they suffered a drug-induced psychosis that took months of therapy to repair. Upon struggling to get a straight job, the singer-songwriter took to the streets of Melbourne and busked, capturing the attention of passers-by with their command of multiple instruments (they play more than 10, including guitar, saxophone, drums, keys and bass) and ability to layer them with the use of loop pedals. That training informed their earliest singles such as “Notion” and the reggae-flavoured “Jungle”, songs that helped Sultana build a global following after they uploaded footage to YouTube of them performing the songs at home. Musically Sultana is as diverse as the instruments they play, incorporating elements of soul (“Cigarettes”), cruisy R&B (“Beyond the Pine”, which preaches that love should have no boundaries), light psychedelia (their collaboration with Matt Corby on “Talk It Out”) and acoustic funk (“Pretty Lady”) into their rootsy sound.
