Mutation

Since the start, Sydney alt-rock quartet RedHook have deployed the heightened language of horror movies to describe difficult experiences in real life. That narrative shorthand continues on their second album, from the opening “Pyromaniac” (“I’ve already burned more bridges black than a pyromaniac”) to later references to zombies and the Scream franchise. None of it would work nearly so well without frontwoman Emmy Mack’s sharply melodic vocals, which can graduate from chatty to vicious within seconds. Hear the way she goes toe to toe with Lucas Woodland from Welsh rockers Holding Absence on “Dr. Frankenstein”, an anthem about suddenly realising you’re surrounded by monsters. And collaborating with Melbourne metalcore unit Alpha Wolf on “Cannibal”, Mack describes feeling an empowering sense of connection in the bedroom while on the long road back from trauma. Musically, RedHook continue to pursue a heavily saturated sound that incorporates electronic programming and pop production techniques alongside crushing guitar riffs and abrupt dynamic shifts. Mack even throws herself into rapping on “Bomb.com”, while “Breaking Up With” opens with a bright horn section and clubby effects. The latter song tackles finally confronting yourself to effect change in your life, making it a fitting inclusion on an album all about personal and creative evolution.
