Postcard From a Living Hell

Postcard From a Living Hell

High contrasts animate the debut album from Sydney alt-rockers RedHook, who fill these songs with roller-coaster shifts from poppy electronics to post-hardcore thrashing. Lead vocalist Emmy Mack’s singing and lyrics follow suit, locating intense drama in the disconnect between her desires and reality. After citing the ominous album title on opener “Postcard Xo”, Mack doubles down on those dystopian themes on “Jabberwocky”, repeating, “Wake me up ’cause this isn’t real”. Yet for all of the more extreme moments here, RedHook also make ample room for commercial airplay with the pop-punk gem “Soju”—featuring guest vocalist Jono Mata from Perth band Sly Withers—and the bracingly melodic “Imposter”, featuring Yours Truly singer Mikaila Delgado. Packing a relatable sense of everyday angst into streamlined anthems, the band let us in on the nagging sense that we just might deserve better in life.
