The Moon (The Dark Side)

The Moon (The Dark Side)

Six months after Bliss n Eso’s The Moon (The Light Side) comes this equally spirited companion. Releasing their eighth and ninth studio albums relatively in tandem is a bold move for the veteran Sydney hip-hop group—the titular MCs and DJ Izm—but this second statement brims with empowering rhymes and earnest homage. On the latter front is a series of samples and flips that sees everyone involved having fun with the source material. “Home” brandishes the woozy ambient hook of Moby’s “Porcelain” and features US rapper Dizzy Wright, while “23 ’Til Infinity” riffs on the Souls of Mischief classic “93 ’Til Infinity” and “Come My Lady” taps Las Vegas MC Ekoh to flip Crazy Town’s 2000 hit, “Butterfly”. Most impactfully, “Chemical Heart (GEED UP)” reworks Grinspoon’s emotional 2002 ballad with some new lyrics circling back to the original song’s inspiration. Elsewhere, singer Benny Morrell appears on two tracks, as he did on the previous album; he adds extra gravitas to the already rousing “Reach the Heavens”. And despite the record’s lunar perch, it’s really all about reflecting on the humanity we share here on Earth—as articulated in the two-part bookend “Tale of Pale Blue Dot”.
