Thriving behind the scenes, Mark Landon, aka M-Phazes, has quietly become one of Australia’s most successful musical exports. He got his start right in the thick of Aussie hip-hop in the early 2010s, tapping many of the country’s best MCs to rap against his warm, head-nodding production. From there he quickly expanded into the realm of pop, shepherding rising artists as both a producer and co-writer. That includes introducing the world to Amy Shark with 2016’s “Adore” and helping Ruel and KYLE break through in a big way. Once Landon became known overseas, American acts like Noah Cyrus, Carlie Hanson and Demi Lovato began to tap his intimate sound and proven pop instincts. Yet he hasn’t lost his touch with hip-hop, as heard with the thumb-piano hook and dryly snappy beat of Kehlani’s “Love Language” or the features he has helmed from Wiz Khalifa and Joey Bada$$. Whatever the genre or setting, his work puts the artist first, amplifying their voice and message as if they were the only person in the room.
