About Ata Kak
Ata Kak is a Ghanaian musician whose blissfully eccentric 1994 album, Obaa Sima, was rescued from complete obscurity by Brian Shimkovitz, an American ethnomusicologist and DJ who reissued it two decades later on his Awesome Tapes From Africa label. Considered ahead of his time, Kak's lo-fi mash-up of highlife, electro-funk, and hip-hop went completely unnoticed upon its original release and he subsequently disappeared from music. The 2015 reissue of his only album helped turn the elusive artist into a cult star and rekindled his career as a performer. In 2025, Kak released the EP Batakari, his first new music since the '90s.
