Aloys Kontarsky was a pianist whose career was closely associated with that of his younger brother, Alfons Kontarsky. Performing together as a piano duo, the brothers specialized in the repertoire for two pianos and piano four hands while also presenting works by contemporary composers. During their career, they gave first performances of compositions by Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Henri Pousseur, and other composers associated with postwar contemporary music. Their recorded legacy was documented in the 18-disc box set Alfons & Aloys Kontarsky: Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon (2026), which brought together their recordings for the label made between 1959 and 1983. Aloys died in 2017, seven years after the death of Alfons.
