About Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) is regarded as a great 20th century composer for the guitar, inspired by his friendship with Andrés Segovia, but his career was built on a much broader platform. Born in Florence and educated in Bologna, he was affiliated with the Società Italiana di Musica Moderna. Being Jewish and fearful of the future in Europe, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1939. There, he wrote many uncredited film scores and taught several well-known film composers. Literature and Judaism were influential in his compositions, which were written in a number of styles, including Impressionism, neo-Classicism, neo-Romantic, and briefly, serialism.
