Tomeka Reid

About Tomeka Reid

Tomeka Reid is a cellist, improviser, composer, educator, and bandleader. Her rich, woody tone and playing technique established her as a key member of jazz ensembles led by Anthony Braxton, Nicole Mitchell, Jaimie Branch, and Makaya McCraven. She is a member of the adventurous Hear in Now trio and leads the Tomeka Reid Quartet. The latter's eponymously titled debut appeared in 2015 and was followed by Signaling, a collaboration with saxophonist Nick Mazzarella in 2017. In 2020 she issued Shards and Constellations, co-led with pianist/composer Alexander Hawkins, and Combinations, an improvised duo with Joe Morris. 2022's Geometry of Trees was an improv quartet date that also included Morris, Taylor Ho Bynum, and Kyoko Kitamura. They followed it with Geometry of Phenomena in 2024. In 2026, Reid joined pianist/electronicist Craig Taborn and drummer Ches Smith on the ECM release Dream Archives.
