Essential Albums
- It's nearly alarming how charming West Side Story remains long after the film's 1961 release. Composer Leonard Bernstein and tyro lyricist Stephen Sondheim update Romeo and Juliet with beautiful balladry ("Maria," "Tonight," "Somewhere") and songs that deliver incisive social commentary with complex rhymes and plenty of jokes ("Jet Song," "America," "Gee, Officer Krupke"). The New York Philharmonic gives the Broadway classic a special kick, especially during Bernstein's lively Stravinsky-influenced instrumentals, including "Prologue," "The Rumble," and the memorable "Dance at the Gym."

About Rita Moreno
The dynamic Puerto Rican actress, dancer, and singer Rita Moreno was the first performer to win all four premier entertainment awards, for film (Oscar), theater (Tony), television (Emmy), and recording (Grammy). After making her first public appearance as a child in Greenwich Village, she appeared on Broadway in the play Skydrift at age 13. She went on to earn many movie roles, winning an Oscar for her electrifying performance in West Side Story (1961), and gave a Tony-winning performance in Broadway's The Ritz (1975). In the '90s, her hectic schedule also involved TV, cabaret, and a 42-city tour with Carol Channing in Two Ladies of Broadway. Her solo recording career didn't begin until 2000 with Rita Moreno, followed by the Spanish-language Una Vez Más in 2015. ~ Rovi Staff
