About Mark Lotz

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Two moments shaped me. In our neighbour's garden in Bangkok, the weekly traditional Thai music and dance performances cast their first spell. In Kampala, I was transfixed by late-night belly dancing around an open fire — hypnotic, powerful, alive. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? John Coltrane, A Love Supreme Khaira Arby, Timbuktu Tarab Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Hari Dhwani - Raga Lalit These records share something essential: They are direct, spiritual, and ancient in character — music that doesn't ask you to listen, it takes you somewhere. Pure immersion from the first note, in the hands of true legends. This makes me happy. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Abu In The Sky” This track is a farewell sent skyward to my friend Abu Dijgo. It is my way of saying: you are not forgotten, and I love you. Recorded with Alan Purves, my long-time duo partner, whose playing so often takes us somewhere deep and spiritual. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Hearing the Batá drums at a Tambor in Havana. The sacred energy never left me — and it gave birth to a trilogy of recordings, a European conversation with Afro-Cuban religious folklore, alongside some of Cuba's greatest exponents of this music. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? My bucket list is to stay on the path — a life in music that keeps taking me to unexpected places. To keep making new music, meeting remarkable artists from around the world, and diving together into that magic space that only music can give you.
