Fokofpolisiekar not only introduced punk and rock music to traditionally conservative Afrikaans audiences, but also ushered both genres into a whole new era locally. Society and suburbia simply had no choice. The Bellville fivesome—made up of Francois van Coke, Johnny de Ridder, Hunter Kennedy, Wynand Myburgh and Jaco "Snakehead" Venter—were musically and socially kicking down the door of the status quo (witness the group’s in-your-face, obscene name). Fokofpolisiekar’s iconic debut EP, As Jy Met Vuur Speel Sal Jy Brand, continues to be regarded as a South African cultural landmark for an entire generation—similar to Radiohead’s OK Computer or Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by Arctic Monkeys. All five band members have also since gone on to found groundbreaking new acts that explore different genres, including Van Coke Kartel (alternative), Die Heuwels Fantasties (electro-pop) and aKING (melodic rock).
