Markus Guentner

German producer Markus Guentner crafts richly atmospheric and hypnotic ambient music, sometimes pulled along by subtle rhythmic currents. An early Kompakt signee, his two albums for the label, 2001's In Moll and 2005's 1981, drifted between cloudy, sometimes chime-sparkled ambiance and propulsive techno tracks, with two albums for Ware, Audio Island (2003) and Lovely Society (2006), focusing on his club-driven side. Guentner's subsequent work has largely been devoid of beats, landing closer to neo-classical, dark ambient, and drone with releases like Shadows of the City (2013) and Black Dahlia (2025). He has collaborated with artists such as Rafael Anton Irisarri, bvdub, and Julia Kent. The 2025 release Arcadia was a joint effort with two other frequent collaborators, zakè and Joachim Spieth.
