About Stephen Salters

Versatile baritone Stephen Salters has a large repertory, ranging from Gluck to contemporary music. He is also an important educator. Salters performs widely in Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as the U.S. In 1997, Salters made his recording debut with the album Stephen Salters, Baritone on the Cypres label in Brussels. Salters has a strong commitment to contemporary music and has performed in world premieres of William Bolcom's Billy in the Darbies, composed for him and the Lark Quartet, and Elena Ruehr's Averno and Gospel Cha-Cha. Beginning with Ruehr: Toussaint Before the Spirits (2007), Salters has devoted himself especially to the music of Ruehr, appearing in operas and smaller works such as Songs for Stephen, which he recorded for the Avie label in 2025.
