Swamp Dogg

A maverick songwriter, singer, and producer whose brand of Southern soul is raunchy, satirical, and full of social and political commentary, Swamp Dogg is the alter ego of veteran R&B Jerry Williams, Jr. As Swamp Dogg, Williams took the rebellious, visionary spirit of the psychedelic era and used it to fuel his singular vision of soul on 1970's Total Destruction to Your Mind. He developed a loyal following for LPs like 1973's Gag a Maggot and 1981's I'm Not Selling Out -- I'm Buying In! He showed a greater dependence on synthesizers from 1989's I Called for a Rope and They Threw Me a Rock onward, but dove headfirst into eccentric electronics on 2018's Love, Loss and Auto-Tune. Williams did an about-face into acoustic roots music with 2024's Blackgrass: From West Virginia to 125th St. and dipped his toe into gospel on 2026's Swamp Dogg Contemplates the Afterlife.
