Norma Winstone

British jazz vocalist Norma Winstone possesses a lissome, expressive, and airy alto and distinctly original phrasing. Emerging in the 1960s, she garnered acclaim internationally with 1972's Edge of Time. She also cut seven albums with trio Azimuth (with John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler) and worked with Ralph Towner and Tony Coe. She returned to the jazz repertoire on 1995's Well Kept Secret with Jimmy Rowles. Winstone recorded 2006's It's Later Than You Think with NDR Big Band, and 2008's Distances in trio. The group also joined her on 2014's Dance Without Answer, and 2018's award-winning Descansado: Songs for Films. She joined pianists Will Bartlett for 2022's The Soundless Dark and Kit Downes for 2024's Outpost of Dreams. A Timeless Place, an archival 1990 broadcast with NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, arrived in 2026 as did the live offering Gilles Peterson Presents Norma Winstone Live at Maida Vale for BBE.
