Norma Winstone

British jazz vocalist Norma Winstone is a singular performer who possesses a lissome, expressive alto, full of airy spaces and distinctly original phrasing. Emerging in the 1960s, she garnered acclaim internationally with 1972's Edge of Time. She also cut seven albums with trio Azimuth (alongside John Taylor and Kenny Wheeler) and worked with Ralph Towner and Tony Coe. She then returned to the classic jazz repertoire, as on 1995's Well Kept Secret with Jimmy Rowles. Winstone recorded 2006'd It's Later Than You Think with NDR Big Band, and 2008's Distances with a trio that included pianist Glauco Venier. This group joined her on 2014's Dance Without Answer, and 2018's award-winning Descansado: Songs for Films. She joined pianist Will Bartlett for 2022's The Soundless Dark, and teamed with pianist Kit Downes for 2024's Outpost of Dreams. A Timeless Place, an archival 1990 broadcast with NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, arrived in 2026.
