A multi-instrumentalist, Wills works extensively in many areas of pop, rock and jazz and is comfortable in latter-day country music, playing with new traditionalists as can be heard on late 80s recordings, including a set from New York’s Knitting Factory. He has played organ, synthesizer, bass, guitar among many instruments and has also sung. In demand as a studio musician, Wills has appeared on many albums since the late 70s. These include Stonebolt, Negativland, Paul McCartney, Perri, Eric Serra, Kirk Whalum, Terry Robb, Ce Ce Peniston, Ricky Lawson, and Bill Engvall. Wills’ first three albums all appeared in Billboard’s country charts with his 1975 debut Barrooms To Bedrooms reaching number 13. In addition to performing, Wills has also written many songs among which are ‘Do It For The Love’, ‘Charlotte’s In North Carolina’, ‘Going Through The Motions Of Love’, ‘Holding Out Hope To You’, ‘I’m Losing My Life’, ‘If You're Thinking You Want A Stranger (There’s One Coming Home)’, ‘Leona’, ‘Line On Love’, ‘No Honor Among Thieves’, ‘A Soft Place To Fall’, ‘Streets Is Watching’, ‘They Never Lost You’, ‘Was She Worth My Heart?’, ‘You Don’t Know How Lucky You Are’ and ‘You’re The Last Thing I Needed Tonight’. His compositions have been recorded by artists such as Jay-Z, Jack Greene, George Strait, Michael English, Con Hunley, Sawyer Brown, John Michael Montgomery, Toby Keith, Chris LeDoux, Neal McCoy, Martina McBride, Garth Brooks, Rhonda Vincent, Jennifer Weatherly, Patty Loveless and John Schneider. Wills has also written on music, including liner notes, and his photography has been used on CD covers.
