I originally wanted to play trumpet, but there were seven folks interested in trumpet and not trombone, and my 5th grade band teacher told us that trombone was the most important instrument in the ensemble! Billy Strayhorn, The Peaceful Side of Jazz John Coltrane, Johnny Hartman, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman Classics The Mitchell-Ruff Duo, Strayhorn: A Mitchell-Ruff Interpretation My greatest inspiration - queer jazz idol Billy Strayhorn! He was basically one of the only openly gay black composers in jazz during his era, and his music is so beautiful and complex, yet carry such a deep yearning and sadness. Lush Life is my fav! Tell us why you chose this song. “Melt Away” This song is about self-love, self-liberation, and the affirmation of my transfeminine self in the face of the weight of societal oppression. The ending line is a mantra I repeat to myself in difficult moments - beneath the scars a heart of gold <3
