About k.d. lang

Blessed with one of the most distinctive and haunting voices in country and pop, Canadian singer-songwriter k.d. lang is best known for her 1992 hit “Constant Craving.” Over the course of her career, she’s collaborated with the likes of Roy Orbison, Tony Bennett, Elton John, and The Killers. • Lang got her start fronting the Reclines, which began as a Patsy Cline cover band before transitioning to original material for their 1984 LP A Truly Western Experience. It was the first of three albums lang and the Reclines would release together. • In 1987, lang teamed with Roy Orbison on a duet version of his “Crying” for the movie Hiding Out. The song went to No. 2 in Canada, made the Top 40 of Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart in the US, and won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. • Lang’s first solo album, 1988’s Shadowland, reached No. 9 in Canada and on the US Country chart. The LP included contributions from the veteran vocal group The Jordanaires and country vocal legends Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn, and Kitty Wells, credited as The Honky Tonk Angels. • She was back with the Reclines for 1989’s Absolute Torch and Twang, lang’s first US gold record. The album brought home a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. • Her pop peak came with 1992’s Ingénue, her second solo album. The LP reached No. 13 in Canada, No. 18 in the US, and No. 3 in the UK. The first single, “Constant Craving,” was a Top 10 hit in Canada and won a Grammy (Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female) in the US. • The Rolling Stones’ 1997 song “Anybody Seen My Baby?” sounded enough like “Constant Craving” that lang and collaborator Ben Mink got a writing credit. • Each of lang’s five subsequent solo albums went Top 40 in Canada, with 2004’s Hymns of the 49th Parallel and 2008’s Watershed cracking the Top 5. • Amid her solo efforts, Lang continued to collaborate. She focused on pop standards for 2002’s Wonderful World, an album of duets with Tony Bennett that won a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. • In 2011, lang released Sing It Loud, backed by the Siss Boom Bang—a band comprising veterans of the Chicks, Guster, and Court Yard Hounds. • Lang was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2013. • She won indie-rock acclaim for 2016’s case/lang/veirs, which she wrote and recorded with alt-country singer Neko Case and folk-pop singer Laura Veirs.
