Surprise Chef

Surprise Chef are an Australian instrumental quintet based in Melbourne. Their musical M.O. is evoking moods in the listener by seamlessly juxtaposing various styles -- jazz-funk, exploitation, and cop soundtracks, sound library records, R&B, and hip-hop -- in the quest to attain a pure groove. Their first two albums, All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings, appeared on Mr. Bongo during the pandemic in 2020. The label distribution got their music across to punters and DJs in Europe and the U.S. 2021's Masters at Work & Harvey Sutherland Remixes was enthusiastically embraced for dance club play. The quintet signed to Big Crown Records to release 2022's Education & Recreation. They returned with Superb in 2025, an experimental exercise in instrumental, experimental, cinematic soul.
