Skyline

Skyline

Voted Best Jazz Instrumental Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards, Skyline is an inspired piano trio summit involving three jazz giants. With Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, Cuban-born pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba can roam wherever he wants musically, as he does on his two originals of the date, “Promenade” and “Siempre Maria.” The encounter begins with “Lagrimas Negras” and later includes “Novia Mia,” two Cuban standards on which the trio puts its own fiery, rhythmically engaging spin. And Carter and DeJohnette reach into their archives for two enduring compositions each. Carter’s open-ended midtempo swinger “Gypsy” is from his 1980 release Parade, while “Quite Place” is a slow, minor-key waltz from 1978’s A Song for You. DeJohnette’s surpassingly melodic “Silver Hollow” and intricate “Ahmad the Terrible” originally featured the drummer himself on piano—the former on the 1978 classic New Directions, the latter on 1984’s Album Album. Rubalcaba delights in dissecting them here, and finishes with the unplanned “RonJackRuba,” brimming with laidback wit.
