Born to Be Blue (Music from the Motion Picture)

The soundtrack to Robert Budreau's tonally precise Chet Baker biopic is as inventively reimagined as the story itself. Trumpeter Kevin Turcotte splendidly channels the jazz bad boy's wistful sound and phrasing in tunes composed by Toronto bandleader David Braid. These include the original bop tune "Ko-Opt," the sultry string ballad "Could Have Been," and even a snappy jazz-mariachi moment, "Tequila Earworm." Ethan Hawke ably captures Baker's high, soft voice in keynote ballads "My Funny Valentine" and "I've Never Been In Love Before."
