John Statz is a Wisconsin native who recorded his seventh album during an ice storm in Vermont. Power went out for 10 minutes while they were rehearsing and an old-fashioned wood stove kept them warm, but it lends authenticity to a roots-rock album that works well beyond the expected clichés. Armed with Morphine’s Billy Conway on drums and Son Volt and Laura Cantrell’s Mark Spencer on guitar and pedal steel—along with select high-grade guests—Tulsa is a masterwork recorded in three inspired days. “Home at Last,” “Exposure,” and “Any Town Will Do” form the album’s core, but it truly extends to the entire album.
