He Said, She Said

The Wans are a no-nonsense rock trio who love the live energy of loud music and who set out to make a debut album that kept up the power of their previous self-titled debut EP. Working with producer Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Rival Sons) and mixing engineer Vance Powell (Jack White, Arctic Monkeys), the trio allegedly cut the tracks “completely live—even the vocals,” according to lead singer/guitarist Simon Kerr. The album is a springboard of raw guitars reminiscent of the heavy rock of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, with a sense of the late-‘70s punk vibe and the ‘90s grunge and alternative scene. A song like “What I’m Feeling” centers on an OCD riff from bassist Thomas Bragg and drummer Mark Petaccia, overlaid with nasty guitars from Kerr. More direct is the agitated aggression of “So Cruel,” a manic two-and-a-half-minute rocker in the Pearl Jam mode. For a touch of new wave authority, there’s the catchy “I Can’t Fix You.”
