Pioneering trapero Noriel enjoyed a victory lap of sorts on 2024’s Trap Island, a project that overtly bridged generations while implicitly hailing his own vital contributions to rap. Coming a full decade after the genre bellwether Trap Capos: Season 1, the Puerto Rican mainstay’s latest illustrates his ongoing proficiency for the form he helped push from the underground into public prominence. He remains as suave an operator as ever on “TAN CARA” as well as the more licentious “TBT 16,” the latter’s slinky beat well suited for a late-night rendezvous. As with the first installment, Trap Island 2 also employs a diverse set of guests that speaks to Latin music’s past and present alike. Veteran reggaetonero Baby Rasta comes through for the melodic duet “DEMENTES,” while younger Colombian trap purveyor Kris R. demonstrates his style on “BOOMERANG.” A welcome if unexpected dembow foray, “EL PEINE” caps off Noriel’s project with Dominican star El Alfa by his side.
