On his creatively liberating 2025 album “V1V0”, Alfredo Olivas proved impervious to trendy temptations while broadening his música mexicana horizons. Putting increased distance between himself and the corridos prohibidos of his El Patroncito past, the prolific Sonoran singer-songwriter and preternaturally gifted accordionist persists with a half-dozen more songs that reflect his evident tastes for banda, norteño, and related hybrid forms. The earnest “MAYDAY” starts things off with an insistent romantic bent, one reliant on perseverance to win the day. From there, “La Pelea De Mi Vida” takes his corridos skill set into near existential territory, vacillating between frustrated exclamations of world-weary despair and redoubled threats to return even mightier than before. The standout title track simply bursts with brass-backed hopes for reconciliation, while “Temporal Sin Ti” picks up the tempo in order to convey a maddening sense of absence and loneliness. Our Favorite Track: On the closing “No Te Limites,” Olivas vows to swallow his pride long enough to achieve resolution through brutal honesty both given and received.
