In their second year as an idol group, KickFlip continued their progression from trend-driven rookies to pop-rock young adults. KICK OFF THE WALL’s greatest strength comes in the two-sides-of-one-coin connectivity of its dual lead singles. Where dreamy album-opener “Puzzle Piece” (which is titled “unfinished” in Korean) embraces staccato melodies to personify the “clumsy and scattered” mess of adolescence, “Kick Off the Wall” uses the drive of an electric guitar to embody youth’s kinetic confidence. To craft the sound of the eight-track K-pop mini album, KickFlip collaborated with LDN NOISE, the British production duo that has become known for their EDM-influenced K-pop songwriting, and 27-year-old American artist iann dior. The latter features on the first of two album versions of “Kick Off the Wall,” lending his lilting rasp to KickFlip’s electronic-rock anthem.
