The pan-Africanist ideal never died—it morphed into hybridized sonic fragments that connect Joburg to Nairobi via Lagos and Accra. One of our favorite evangelists of the continent’s far-reaching musical ingenuity is Lagos-based mixmaster Salt The DJ. For her Africa Now mix, Salt curated tunes from Ayra Starr, Davido, Victony, TxC, Scotts Maphuma, and Focalistic, along with a bevy of other hitmakers across the African diaspora. “I picked these songs because they’re a good reflection of what I love about African music right now,” Salt says. “African music is constantly changing, and I love that. We’re seeing artists experiment with different sounds, mix genres, and take inspiration from different parts of the world while still keeping their African identity.” Hear the Salt The DJ vision of Africa Now and check back each month for more one-of-a-kind mixes.
