With her third album, Belgian supernova Angèle is ready to move from cult hero to world-conquering pop star. A confident, high-energy romp that veers from dance-floor breathlessness (“Dis-le”) to lush visions of an electrified future (“Une seule vie”) to passionate ballads delivered amidst a collapsing world (“On verra”), Instinct puts Angèle’s range and pop savvy on full display. In 2024, Angèle appeared alongside house master Kavinsky and nouveaux-wavers Phoenix at the Olympics. The Instinct guest list is similarly full of A-listers: the house collective Soulwax (fellow Belgians who power the flashy “Trop”), the heavy disco duo Justice (on the pounding “What You Want”), and fellow explorer Caroline Polachek (who appears with French DJ SebastiAn on the woozy “Love Triangle”). But even when surrounded by stars, Angèle’s presence is commanding, her alto slicing through the big beats and buzzing synths as she stakes her claim for worldwide renown.
