PRESS PLAY

PRESS PLAY

The first solo extended play from Thai K-pop idol LISA, PRESS PLAY doesn’t waste any time declaring itself. “SaWaDiKa,” a hip-hop track named after the Thai-language word for “hello,” starts at 100, the 29-year-old rapper shout-singing, “Hello, Sawadika/Yeah, you know my wrist is cold/Got this timepiece from Geneva,” over a trap-pop foundation. It’s a proclamation of LISA’s Thai identity, the international scope of her career, and her extravagant wealth all in one high-octane intro. LISA’s unwavering confidence defines all six tracks on PRESS PLAY. On the hard-hitting hip-hop track “V12,” LISA goes deep on her love for high-performance cars, before getting ready for the club on the dance-pop hype track “Cobra.” On the sensual album-ender “Sweat,” LISA invites listeners to perspire. “Tarantino” casts BLACKPINK’s main dancer and lead rapper as an action movie protagonist. The Kill Bill references keep coming on the bass-driven breakup banger “Cut U Off,” which begins with Bernard Herrmann’s “Twisted Nerve.” The whistle was used in the Tarantino film, but might also remind K-pop fans of BLACKPINK’s “WHISTLE.” The choice simultaneously ties LISA’s debut EP to her undeniable success as a K-pop idol and to her much broader international aspirations as an entertainer.
