Twin Flames

Twin Flames

Seven albums in, Ziggy Alberts knows not to overcomplicate things. Working once again with producer Garrett Kato, the Australian singer-songwriter keeps his rootsy folk pop to a streamlined strum and thump that leaves plenty of room for his words to ring out. Those words are especially personal this time around: “I Blame Myself” unpacks the process of personal accountability for drinking too much and other everyday errors, before “You’re Like Christmas” skips around through Alberts’ childhood and beyond—including receiving a guitar as a teen, not knowing it would change his life. Several songs touch on entwined themes of connection, intimacy, and freedom, while the closing “Graceland” sees Alberts muse on aging and mortality: “Entrenched in endless entropy/Knowing I will die.” Yet it’s a song about inner peace rather than worry or fear, a serene vibe that’s underscored by delicate wisps of slide guitar.
