Across a career that was kick-started by victory in the 2015 edition of the musical reality TV show, MTN Hitmaker, KiDi has proven himself to be one of the defining Ghanaian acts of his generation. Throughout his career, the Accra-born singer has balanced a gift for sweet, highlife-inflected romance with the high-octane party anthems that launched him to the top of African pop. On his third studio album, Where Do We Go from Here, he blurs the line between soul-searching and acceptance, taking stock of the future while continuing to deliver the indelible hooks that made him a star. The project’s opening track, “Crazy World,” finds KiDi pondering the absurdities of 21st-century life while resolving to stay true to himself. On “Crucified,” he takes aim at his critics over dizzying log drums. That defiance also yields to spiritual renewal on the gospel-tinged “Lord Knows.” The whole of these themes converge on “Babylon,” where KiDi is celebrating the good life and offering thanks to his creator over lively, flickering percussion. Through it all, KiDi never loses sight of the dance floor. On “Special Lovin,” he returns to his highlife roots to reassure his partner: “How many times we go talk the same matter/No let them forfeit our love.” On “2 Much Sugar,” he promises a lifetime of sweet devotion and revelry, before a linkup with Ghanaian rap titan Sarkodie on “IDK,” itself a witty tribute to the unpredictable twists of romance. In many ways, Where Do We Go from Here captures an artist preparing for an even bigger audience. That ambition comes into sharp focus on the closing track, “Dreams,” where he cites Michael Jackson’s Thriller as his benchmark. “I want the world to sing my song, I want the world to know my name,” he croons. His biggest moments are clearly yet to come.
