Matthew Miller grew up a hardcore kid in New Jersey, and he brings that energy to his alternative rap career as GDP. He’s an underground champ, a title he held on to even during a hiatus from releasing solo albums between 2013 and the 2026 release of this electrifying testament to his skills on the mic. “Island in the Sky” pierces with guitar squall and pummeling drums, a style in conversation with his early albums. It’s a reminder that Miller was doing art-punk rap hybrids before the style was a popular subgenre of the hip-hop underground. “Used to want a Maybach, settle for a Porsche,” he raps. Elsewhere, on “Undone,” he recruits Fatboi Sharif, another boundary-pushing New Jersey rapper, with whom he officially ended his hiatus on the 2025 collab EP ENDOCRINE. The song is a wild ride, noisy and nervous, a delirious concoction of squawking guitars and industrial synths. GDP floats above the chaos, at peace now that he’s back doing exactly what he loves. Favorite beat: The chopped, fragmented chaos of “Ethereal Sphere.”
