On Just Beyond Endless Mountain, the eighth LP from Kristian Matsson under The Tallest Man On Earth moniker, he embraces his roots—though these are familial roots, not musical ones. Fans of his early classic albums recognize the DNA of American folk icons, but on LP8, Matsson studied ‘polskas,’ old field recordings, and folk songs from his home country of Sweden. “Colors” features Matsson’s signature powerful rasp galloping above a propulsive guitar melody and the occasional woodwind accent. It’s a song of desperation and yearning, made almost lighthearted in the way these instruments flutter through the air. Elsewhere, on “The Forest Keeper,” Matsson incorporates the rhythmic strumming that informed many of his early recordings, though the ramshackle percussion gives the tune a new spin. “Overboda” is a stunning duet with Sofia HK, a reminder that this oft-solitary project always has room for a friend.
