“Stay alive, stay awake, no fate but the one you create.” So says Darkest Hour vocalist John Henry on “Salvation,” one of the many highlights on Suffer Divine. The Washington, D.C. metalcore heavyweights say that their 11th album is about deriving self-worth from suffering, but there’s clearly more to it than that. The thrashy title track “Suffer Divine” takes aim at those who push hatred and division to advance their own twisted political agendas. “No Conquered Hearts” combines the band’s undying love for Swedish death metal with an anthemic chorus about thinking for yourself. Melo-death banger “Warrior” boasts a killer solo and lyrics about fighting the many forces of oppression.
