Nearly 15 years into their career, DIIV makes their biggest stylistic shift yet on their fifth album ZIRP!, steering their shoegaze ship headlong into alternative pop. Joining the four-piece on their journey is production maestro A. G. Cook, who recently assisted in piling on the six-stringed scuzz on Charli xcx’s Music, Fashion, Film. On ZIRP!, Cook still leaves plenty of room to let DIIV’s now-signature sound shine while adding his own subtle touches on songs like the effervescent “Trillions” and the twinkling closer “Idiot in the Sky.” Zachary Cole Smith’s vocals, once ensconced in gauzy obfuscation, are clearer than ever across these 11 tracks as he waxes poetic on money, misery, and—as with ZIRP!’s predecessor, 2024’s Frog in Boiling Water—the end of the world.
