If Leon Bridges had to sum up Happiness Anytime with one word, he knows exactly what it would be. “This album is very vibrant,” he tells Apple Music. “My last album, Leon, was a window into my heart. It was very poignant, very slow, and I was like, ‘Yeah, it’s time to get the people moving again.’” Thanks to Bridges’ fondness for Afrobeats, Brazilian rhythms, and his long-proven penchant for soul and R&B, Happiness Anytime wastes no time in achieving his goal. Opener “Light the Way” leads with an undulating groove that’s both an invitation and mission statement: Yes, the warm brass, intricate guitar work, and Bridges’ velvet voice all sound fantastic, but the point is the beat and losing yourself in it between taps on the cymbals. The lyrics of “Talk It Over” may vent over a frustrating relationship, but it’s impossible to hear its bassline without shaking your hips or, at the very least, tapping your toe in 4/4 time. “All Day, All Night,” featuring Lydia Kitto of dance-pop trio Jungle, is languid and libidinous, the perfect fit for a late-night tryst in a bar in Bahia—and it isn’t the only track on the album that features Kitto or her bandmates. “The whole goal with this project was to make some upbeat music,” says Bridges. “When I sit down with the guitar, that’s kind of challenging for me. I crossed paths with Jungle in Copenhagen and, man, it was just like a no-brainer to get with them and make this music. The process was genuinely one of the easiest experiences.” “Happiness Anytime,” the result of this Copenhagen hang, perfectly encompasses the album on the whole “because it’s a reflection of the space that I was in,” Bridges shares. “I feel like happiness is such an up-and-down journey. I’m kind of encouraging people, encouraging myself, to choose joy, no matter what’s going on around you.”
