Netherworlds

With their 10th album, Finnish melodeath maestros Insomnium further solidify their reputation as masters of the form. On Netherworlds, new member Tomy Laisto joins veterans Ville Friman and Markus Vanhala to complete the band’s guitarist/vocalist triumvirate, while ex-Swallow the Sun keyboardist Aleksi Munter provides sweeping orchestral textures. Prog-metal opus “Arch of the Sky” is inspired by a story from Sámi mythology in which celestial hunters pursue a deer across the sky in perpetuity, while “Gleam in the Black” tells of a woman wandering the nighttime forest for a lost lover. Album centerpiece “The Hour Grows Late” features guest appearances from Tomi Koivusaari, Santeri Kallio, and Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis, thus connecting Insomnium to a Finnish musical tradition that stretches back to death metal’s formative years.
