Grumpy is the project of Heaven Schmitt, but the shapeshifting, borderless 2026 album Unfindable Ring is marked by the bond he shares with his collaborators. Led by Schmitt, Grumpy also includes Anya Good, Ellie Long, Austin Arnold, Diego Clare, and Lane Rodgers, and the group operates like something more than the average tight-knit band; Schmitt has dated everyone in the band besides Clare and used to be married to Arnold. Friends, lovers, and exes unite to create this alt-fantasy tale of the “unfindable ring,” a search that animates the album but never ties the songwriter and his bandmates to any particular thread. It’s a loose concept from which the group explores slacker rock, shoegaze, and more. “OBL” vibrates with the twang of late-’90s alt-country, while “Last of Your Kind” is a quirky, piano-led pop tune bolstered by Schmitt and a gaggle of harmonizers. There’s a singer at the center, but throughout Unfindable Ring, Heaven Schmitt is one voice among many. Our Favorite Lyric: “Twenty Five”: “You can always come home to me/Patch you up when you need to be.”
