Abandoning their heavy reliance on guest vocalists, Long Island hardcore unit Pain of Truth go it alone on their second album. Vocalist Michael Smith and his crew hone their New York beatdown delivery to a knuckleduster edge as guitarists Nik Hansen and Ridge Rhine bring the noise with squealing Kerry King-style solos. The band’s deep Hatebreed influence bleeds through on pulverizing pit fodder “Stranded” and “Fed by Fear,” while “Unforgiven” combines Smith’s lengthy shouts with a grinding Pantera groove. Those looking for star-studded cameos might be disappointed, but Pain of Truth have more than proven that they can stand on their own.
