Everything about Greg Freeman’s 2026 album All Set the Bone moves with purpose. It was made on the road, in Vermont, New Mexico, and California, stitched together during gaps in touring in support of his 2025 LP, Burnover. All Set the Bone is the second half of a vicious boxing combination, the upper cut following a testy jab. The songwriting, as such, is urgent and streamlined, raucous but never excessive. On “Totaled,” feedback and drum rolls give way to a burning rock cut, with squealing guitar melodies and a sloshing backbeat providing the song an almost palpable electricity. “Hail Mary,” which begins slowly before unfurling in a cascade of noisy fuzz, manages to deliver both raw energy and unvarnished emotionality, thanks in large part to Freeman’s lyrics: “The memory of last year’s loss/Gets pulled far away from us/Like waves sucked out to the sеa and thrust.” Our Favorite Track: the slow-burning folk rock of bands like Songs: Ohia on “Marooned.”
