Do Not Dare To Dream

Each time the Scottish indie stalwarts Teenage Fanclub work on a new album, they find a new location to stoke their creativity. For their 13th full-length, the band went to Great Bernera, a remote island in the northwest of Scotland with a stone arrangement that predates Stonehenge. The solitude and the history informed founding members Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley as they wrote, and the gravity of their surroundings—as well as the fact that they’ve been collaborating for nearly four decades—informed their perspective on global and personal woes. “Tomorrow People” uses future-coded musical touches (analog synth bursts, dramatic organ breaks) that sound inspired by its sci-fi namesake to highlight its message of clear-eyed optimism, while “Be with You Tonight” finds its sweetness in Mellotron strings, sumptuous guitar solos, and the idea of love triumphing over even the most persistent ails.
