GODBREATH

Bonnie Fraser has long been an unflinching lyricist, but the fiery singer/guitarist wields her brutal honesty to convey a surprising degree of optimism on Stand Atlantic’s fifth album. Written from a happier place following a long spell of self-doubt, “Favourite Flavour” is a giddy anthem that revisits the Sydney quartet’s earliest pop-punk leanings. Likewise, “Velcro” and “NEXT2U” are both bubbly love songs—though Fraser has said the latter is about close friends and found family as much as about romantic partners. Elsewhere, Stand Atlantic bolster their modern take on alt-rock with massive hooks, belted-out choruses, and stadium-ready vocal echoes. “finger” and “HeadRush” prove especially radio-friendly, flirting with throwback emo and even R&B, respectively. When some of Fraser’s former angst does flare back up, as on “EDGE OF VEGAS,” she reframes it as a plea for salvation: “Now I need someone to save me/I’m on the edge of breaking.” For all the band’s dynamic, confident delivery, those moments of vulnerability cut the deepest here.
